How Augmented Reality is saving lives & supporting International Suicide Prevention Day 10th September

More than 800,000 people take their lives each year across the world. That equates to one suicide every 40 seconds. Every year, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death globally for people of all ages. In the UK and ROI, more than 6,000 people die by suicide a year – that’s an average of 18 a day.

Reaching out to people who are going through a difficult time can be a game changer. People who are feeling low or suicidal often think no-one cares. Small things like hearing from colleagues, friends or family, feeling listened to or just being told that ‘it’s ok to talk’ can make a huge difference.

This year is the first World Suicide Prevention Day with the theme “Working Together to Prevent Suicide.” Half of employees said they would not discuss mental health with their manager and only 24% of managers have received some form of training on mental health at work. Evolving technology has impact on all aspects of our lives, including our mental health and wellbeing. Here at Enlighten we use technology to make lives better.

To support the  International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) & World Suicide day on 10th September Enlighten have updated their “World’s First” Augmented Reality poster campaign they created with Rethink Mental Illness.

We produced the world’s first AR awareness raising campaign for Rethink mental illness (the largest mental health charity in Europe). Based upon campaigns we targeted at various educational establishments we have seen a 59% increase in safeguarding referrals. A significant number of those referrals related to self-harm (42% increase), suicidal tendencies, threats or attempts (8% increase), diagnosed mental health concerns (58% increase).

By providing support materials that address a range of mental health issues you can reduce the number of people who go on to feel suicidal.

We want to increase our support this year by offering our free “AugMental Health” AR interactive posters to any business organisation seeking to improve their workforce’s mental wellbeing. Please find attached PDF documents of Enlighten’s AR mental health support posters that we are providing free for your organisation to print and place around the workplace.

You can use them as standalone printed awareness raising posters or as Augmented Reality portals that provide point of need support to individuals. The augmented reality materials offer the first phase of support – instant, point of need, self-help techniques and early intervention strategies. All the resources also include signposting to follow on professional support with information on long-term strategies to improve mental health.

Preventing suicide is often possible and we all can all make a difference.  Many factors lead someone to consider suicide. One of these is that they be suffering from a mental illness. Studies indicate that over 80-90% of those who commit suicide are suffering from an underlying mental health issue. We believe that by tackling these issues the suicide rate will decrease proportionally.

By raising awareness and reducing stigma associated with mental illness Enlighten want people to become more open about their feelings and help friends, colleagues and family members identify mental health issues in people close to them. For each suicide approximately 135 people suffer intense grief or are otherwise affected. This amounts to 108 million people per year who are profoundly impacted by suicidal behaviour.

By providing support materials that address a range of mental health issues we can reduce the number of people who go on to feel suicidal. Please download our FREE AR posters, print them off and place them around your workplace or learning establishment.

To trigger the Augmented reality content you will need to download the Zappar app (free on app store or google play store) and a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G connection.

Open the Zappar app and point the device’s camera at the code on the poster – It will look something like this.

This will activate the augmented reality trigger and the digital content from the poster.

As a recap…….
